Although Keats Island has received some rain the island and the forest are still extremely dry and the duff is only surface wet. One afternoon of sunshine and everything is tinder dry again.
What the Danger Class Ratings mean:
Low
Low fire danger.
Moderate
Carry out any forest activities with caution.
High
Fire hazard is serious. Extreme caution must be used in any forest activities. Burning permits and industrial activities may be restricted.
Extreme
Extremely high fire hazard. General forest activities may be restricted, including burning permits, industrial activities and campfires.
Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
Before you light a fire
Check for burn bans and upcoming weather reports, in particular avoid long periods of
no precipitation and forecasts of significant winds.
Burn only organics wood and paper. Do not burn garbage,
Clear a fire break around your fire down to the dirt. Remove all fuel materials.
Ready fire fighting equipment and extinguishing supplies.
Schedule a fire watch. Do not leave a fire unattended.
Extinguish if leaving the fire for any length of time.
Return after 3 hours and again the next day. Wet and churn down to the dirt.
Check for hot spots and incipients. Continue until all is cold to the touch.
Do not light a fire that you will have to abandon within 24 hours.

Each recieved a $1150 fine.
